A Brief History

ANICHRA was founded in 2006 by Dr. Dze-Ngwa, but it was legalized in 2009.  Born and raised in  the town of Wum in North West Cameroon,  young Dze-Ngwa, at the age of  about 10, had a "spoiled New Years' Day" in 1981, when seven of his village parents were shot and killed because of the recurrent farmer-grazer conflicts in the region.   Five years later, the Lake Nyos gas disaster swept away 2000 lives including his friends and bench-mate. Dze-Ngwa's sad memories were reawakened as his early years in the University experienced violent student protests orchestrated by the reintroduction of competitive politics in the country. Dze-Ngwa became interested in studying conflicts and human rights issues and researched for a Masters and terminal degree on issues of conflicts. His entire research interest was shaped by crises and conflicts.

In 2008 Dze-Ngwa received a research grant on "Peace and Citizenship Education" and strongly recommended that  peace and citizenship education should be taught in Cameroon schools and colleges. This was highly acclaimed and since then, he has been involved in teaching and researching on various aspects of conflicts both nationally and internationally. He was involved in research on reforming the 1973 gun laws in Cameroon, Urban violence in Cameroon and the February 2008 food crisis in the country, among others. Dze-Ngwa is very passionate about peace-building and believes that people conflict and abuse the rights of others because they are not educated in the respect of basic human values. As an advocate of Education for Peace and Human Rights, ANICHRA was born and it is growing from strength to strength as many  of his  teachers, colleagues, students, friends and well-wishers, share in the values of the association. Recently, the City of Savannah, through its Step-Up Savannah program embraced ANICHRA activities when Dze-Ngwa graduated from the Step-Up Savannah Leadership Academy. He strongly believes that conflict anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere and a cause for hardship and underdevelopment. He argues, “My vision is to reduce illiteracy, conflicts and Human Rights Abuse. I need to invest in others to help make them better by using just what I have: my voice and my time; my education and training. My vision has become my mission”. To him, this has to be done through the philosophy of sharing; by paying fees and supplying school needs to the less privileged, taking education to the under-served areas, providing scholarships to children who distinguish themselves, taking street children and sex workers off the streets through re-education, opening of schools and training centers, establishing sustainable economic activities, combating crimes and armed conflicts, promoting peace-building mechanisms in conflict areas (in schools and colleges), and through research and publication.
